gotta do ... or get to do?

I have a co-worker who doesn't really 'get' me. At least, I don't think so, anyway. Sometimes she asks me why I'm so happy all the time.

Not everyone is content with this life. Oh, I know. This isn't much of a revelation to most of you. Truth be told, I have had my moments of wondering how much more I can take, and longing for eternity with my Heavenly Father. For those without that hope of eternity, I guess I can understand floundering in this life.

Back to my co-worker ... once in a while, especially during my first year at the flower shop, I would show her something I did, or an order in my hand, and say, "Look what I get to do!" I think she often thinks of her job as something she 'has to' do, not what she 'gets to' do. The one is a chore, the other is a delight.

Oh, I should really look at more of my life (i.e., housework) as a 'get to do' list rather than a 'gotta do' list. It really is more a matter of attitude. When I read Darlene's 'blog, I start to catch it ... she is one who views everything she does around the house as a ministry of loving her family and everyone who comes into her home.

Well, guess what we got to do last night? We got to take care of our little man overnight! Yes, we've had him for an evening before, or an entire day, but this was our first overnighter together without Mommy and Daddy.

He was so good! I fed him his after-dinner-before-bedtime snack of Life cereal with milk, and changed him into his jammies while Grandpa turned on some Dr. Seuss videos. Then he sat with Grandpa and quickly fell asleep on his lap watching TV. He awoke in the middle of the night, but went back to sleep again. Then he slept until 10 AM, when I went up to wake him. He woke up happy and we went downstairs for a change of clothes and breakfast.

Things I've observed that crack me up:

  • when he eats, he hums and plays with his hair
  • when he walks, he's usually carrying something in at least one hand
  • he likes most music, but especially Toby Mac
  • he has an excellent sense of rhythm (like his Daddy did)
  • he nods his head instead of talking, but his 'sign language' is getting better
  • simple things delight him--he is learning so much, and it's so cute to watch him!
  • he is never doing only one thing at a time, and it sometimes trips him up
  • he is a kinesthetic learner--he learns by doing. For example, while eating breakfast, he kept reaching over to the nearby radiator and saying, 'aahhhnch' (translated: 'hot!'--he hasn't learned to do the 'h' or 't' sounds yet, so it sounds throaty, but we could hear him imitating the 't' sound better the more he tried)
And tomorrow, we get to:
  • worship the Lord with our sisters and brothers
  • have lunch or dinner with the family
  • rest
  • make our home a haven for whomever the Lord says we get to bless this week
  • give our tithe to God's house
  • enjoy each other for one more day
what do you get to do today? tomorrow? this week?
